Mit der Unabhängigkeit des Saarlandes am 1.5.48 wurden auch die Postgebühren verändert. Ab 1.10.48 galten für Westdeutschland und West-Berlin Auslandsporti in das Saarland. Die SBZ/DDR betrachtete das Saarland weiterhin als Inland. Entsprechend musste auf Sendungen nur die Inlandsgebühr entrichtet werden. Entsprechende Sendungen wurden im Saarland jedoch mit Nachgebühr belegt. Alternativ gab es auch die Praxis, dass in westdeutschen Durchlaufstellen das fehlende Porto nachgeklebt wurde. Dies Massnahme war eher selten und auch zeitlich begrenzt, da das verklebte Porto beim Absender in der SBZ nicht eingefordert werden konnte.

With the independence of the Saarland on May 1, 1948, postal tariffs were also changed. As of October 1, 1948, foreign postage to the Saarland applied to West-Germany and West-Berlin. The SOZ/GDR continued to regard the Saarland as domestic. Accordingly, only the domestic rate had to be paid on shipments. However, corresponding items in the Saarland were subject to surcharging. Alternatively, there was also the practice that the missing postage was subsequently affixed at West-German transit points. This measure was rather rare and also limited in time, since the applied postage value could not be claimed from the sender in the SOZ.
